Ireland has some of the clearest and cleanest seas with a vast variety of quality fishing, making it one of the best sea angling destinations in Europe.
Practically any coastal town in Ireland will have several excellent spots, including piers, beaches, and rocks, where you can drop a line into waters that are full of fish.
Because of the warming influence of the North Atlantic Drift, the seas can be fished from spring to late autumn for species that in other regions are found only in the summer months. Warm water species such as trigger fish, red mullet, red bream, sunfish and amberjack are often caught along the Irish coastline. There are ample cold water species to be caught too as the seas are near the divide between the cooler north Atlantic waters and the southern influence. Over 80 species can be caught in Ireland's seas.
The pollution free waters of Clare and north Kerry are under fished, providing incredible angling off the many piers, rocky ledges and long sandy beaches along the coast. The waters off the west coast of Ireland around Ballyvaughan are particularly productive shore angling grounds. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream bring in a plentiful supply of sea fish which can easily be caught from the shore. Ballyvaughan has many well established shore angling marks which are easily accessible and signposted. Rock fishing is popular at Ballyreen and Poulcraven, while excellent angling beaches are Liscannor Beach and Fanore.
Kilkee, in County Clare, offers a great sea angling location at Rinevella Bay. There is easy access to the beach via a road that runs along the head of the beach. Here you can catch dogfish and flatfish with fish bait and lugworm. The south side of the main beach at Kilkee produces flounder and occasional bass.
The beautiful Dingle Peninsula is a fantastic sea angling destination, offering a variety of marks ranging from the rough surf of its rugged beaches, to calmer estuary spots, piers and rock marks that drop into deep water. The Dingle Harbour is a rewarding sea angling mark, rendering conger, bass, mackerel, pollock, flounder and mullet. Beach, marina and rock fishing are all possible around the harbour.
