Cape Town is famous for its beach culture. While the Atlantic water is frigid and the wind tends to whip in summer, Clifton and Camps Bay are THE places to see and be seen in South Africa. Frequented by the rich and famous, you too can experience the laid back culture with a cocktail in one hand and a surfboard in the other. Less known to visitors are Strand Beach and Bikini Beach in Gordon's Bay just east of Cape Town on the other side of False Bay. The waters on this side are warmer and are preferred by the locals of the Somerset West area.
Head to warmer waters on the Durban side where the Indian ocean waters are safe for swimming and the beaches stretch for miles. Not far are the resort towns of Margate and Umhlanga on the Hibiscus Coast. The entire coast line can be explored on foot and they are a shell collectors dream.
To escape the crowds and find some seclusion, go to the Garden Route in the Western Cape. Every town has a beach, but the best can be found in George, Knysna, Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay and Port Elizabeth. Jeffreys Bay is also found along this route and while it has beautiful beaches, it is renowned as one of the best surf spots in the world.
Beaches also line the west coast from Langebaan to Alexander Bay and if you can stand the freezing water they are well worth a visit.
