Ever wanted to land a marlin? South Africa has some of the best Offshore Fishing in the world. With coastlines on two distinct ocean habitats (Indian and Atlantic), anglers can experience a diversity in catch and the challenge of landing some of the largest fish in any ocean.
Cape Town, with its mixture of two ocean currents, is the undisputed capital of South Africa game fishing. Species caught include whopping 120 kg yellow fin tuna, cape snoek, cape salmon, other species of tuna, dorado and marlin.
There are several charter companies operating at all times of the year and their knowledgeable guides will take you out to waters specifically rich in your catch of choice. Some operators offer shark fishing for the more adventurous.
Charter companies also operate out of Durban for those who would prefer the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean. This area is known for its bottom and reef fishing and the main species caught are salmon, Rock Cod and Red Fish. Experts are on hand to take you to the best waters.
If your goal is to catch a marlin and only a marlin, head to Sodwana Bay on the northern coast of KwaZulu Natal just south of Mozambique. This area is teeming with black and striped marlin, and the occasional blue marlin is caught. Over fishing has lead to a mostly tag and release method being used in Sodwana Bay.
