Exploring the ocean in a sea kayak is one of the best and most environmentally sound ways to get a closer look at wildlife or just experience the surf. With a vast coastline and varied marine life, South Africa is a wonderful place to try your hand at sea kayaking.

In freezing waters, getting into a kayak rather than swimming or surfing is a far more tempting way to explore the ocean surrounds the West Coast. Operators in the towns of Saldanha, Paternoster and Langebaan offer tours to see the seals and frolic in the waves with dolphins. Conservation is high on their priority list and guides will teach you about the fragility of the ecosystem.

Cape Town's False Bay has several opportunities to get out on the water in a sea kayak. Guided tours are available to go whale watching, commune with seals or play with the penguins on boulders beach. Overnight and multi-day trips are available for the really adventurous types.

Dolphin watching on a sea kayak is available in Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route.
