If you have never tried leaping out of a plane, hurtling toward the earth, releasing your parachute and then floating gracefully the rest of the way to the ground, South Africa is a great place to attempt the exciting sport of skydiving. Most of the major centres have schools, and many offer tandem jumps if you want to take the leap of faith without all the hassle of learning how to do it.
If you are going to try it, it might as well be in a beautiful location, so Cape Town is probably a good place to start. With Table Mountain, Robben Island and the rest of the Cape Peninsula hurtling toward you as you drop from the plane, the views will be unsurpassed. Well, that is, if you can open your eyes for long enough... After you jump, there are plenty of places to go for a well earned cocktail on the beach.
Several sky dive clubs operate out of Johannesburg and Pretoria and some offer tandem jumps for the beginner. If you are more serious about skydiving, certification courses are offered at reasonable prices. Tandem jumps are also available out of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape.
