Experiencing the African landscape on the back of a horse is something not to be missed by any visitor comfortable on horseback and serious about really getting back to nature. Horse riding in South Africa can be experienced in nearly every part of the country and the variety of terrain and spectacular scenery make for both challenging and breathtaking adventures.

Anyone serious about exploring South Africa on horseback and making it a big part of their holiday should head to the province of Mpumalanga. Stables and lodges operating out of or near to Graskop, Pilgrim's Rest and Nelspruit offer multi-night excursions leading you deep into the wilderness and offer prime game viewing of wildlife along the way.

Most of these rides are over challenging terrain, so they are not for beginner or nervous riders. Some stables and lodges offer day trips and less challenging rides.

Clarens in the Free State near the border with Lesotho offers exciting rides with the chance to gallop over open plains or join in on an authentic cattle drive. This is a very family-friendly setting and most stables offer ponies for the kids.

To gallop along pristine white sand beaches, head to Knysna on the Garden Route in the Western Cape where operators offer sunrise and sunset beach rides. It is also the prime destination to go deep in the forest on horseback and multi-day guided adventures are available.

Other prime horse riding destinations include Cape Town, Addo, where visitors can experience elephants in the wild on rides, Bergville, Coffee Bay, Clanwilliam, Dundee, Franschhoek, Montagu, Port St. Johns and Bela Bela.
