Along with its 20 national parks, South Africa has dozens of areas set aside as provincial nature reserves. These are wonderful places for hiking, mountain biking and just getting into nature and they are a must for visitors who want to get out into tranquil, natural surroundings.

The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park on the northern Kwa-Zulu Natal coast is one of the prime wildlife destinations in South Africa. Proclaimed a World Heritage Site, this 38 000 hectare sanctuary is home to hundreds of bird species, hippo, crocodile and some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world. It is also famous in the summer as a nesting site for sea turtles. St Lucia is a a wildlife lover's paradise.

The Cederberg Wilderness Area in the northern regions of the Western Cape near Clanwilliam is a must for visitors who are serious about hiking. The Cederberg is known for its beautiful rock formations and mountainous terrain.

Its rugged mountains and challenging trails make it ideal for hardy and adventurous hikers. The Cederberg is also an area with intensive conservation programmes, including the replanting of critically endangered Clanwilliam Cedar trees and a programme to minimize the interaction between leopards and farmers in the area.

Renowned as one of South Africa's best ecotourism destinations, the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park in Kwa-Zulu Natal has also been named a World Heritage Site. It is best known for its over 500 examples of San Rock Art painted on caves throughout the region. Fishermen can try their hand at the well stocked rivers and lakes and it is a perfect place to spend a weekend camping with the family.
