For the more adventurous wildlife enthusiast, some South African reserves allow you to go on safari on foot. Experienced, armed rangers take you on excursions into the bush for a unique game viewing experience. It is a chance to see the animals' habitat up close and you can learn bush tracking techniques and gain in depth knowledge of the surrounding plant life. Smaller animals easily missed from a car can also be viewed.
Quality game walking experiences are offered throughout the country and mostly at private game reserves. Most take place at either sunrise or sunset as the midday African sun is unbearable for both humans and animals. Locations to look for include Addo, Hluhluwe, Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa, Thabazimbi and Bela Bela. All have private reserves that cater to guests wanting to explore the landscape on foot.
Certain locations in the Kruger National Park offer guests the extremely unique opportunity to view game on foot on a multi-day excursion. Led by armed rangers, you would have the chance to walk through completely unspoilt wilderness and see parts of the park not seen by the average visitor. Three nights are spent at rustic huts and all meals are catered for by the staff. Daily walks in the mornings and afternoons are also offered at most camps.
