As the safest and best place to view game in Africa, South Africa is the most popular destination for visitors who want to experience the wilds of the African Savannah. Game viewing can be done almost everywhere, including on private reserves, but the National Parks offer the biggest diversity of species.

While the “Big Five” - elephant, white rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard - get the most attention, equally important are giraffe, hippo, zebra and the dozens of species of buck roaming the South African bush.

Private reserves all over the country - for example at Addo, Hluhluwe, Hoedspruit, Musina, Sun City, Phalaborwa, Thabazimbi and Bela Bela - all provide visitors with the opportunity to climb into a converted 4X4 vehicle and explore the surrounding areas for activity.

Game Drives usually take place at sunrise and sunset when the animals are most active. The heat of the day drives them into the shade making them nearly invisible. Your guide can also provide you with valuable information on habitat, behaviour and local conservation efforts.

If you want to do your exploring in your own vehicle you will have to head to either Kruger National Park in the North East or Addo Elephant National Park in the southern portion of the Eastern Cape. The best times to visit are during the dry seasons as the parched landscape forces animals to stick close to watering holes where viewing is at its best.
