Although best known for its wine, South Africa is also home to several distilleries where some of the world's finest brandy and spirits are produced. For those who would like to try some of these excellent products, there are several locations that offer tastings and tours.
The Cape Wine region hosts several world class brandy distilleries. Producers in Stellenbosch combine centuries old techniques and gorgeous historic surroundings and these locations are not to be missed. Worcester, on the N1 highway leading out of Cape Town, has the largest brandy cellar in the world and extensive tours are available. Brandy is also produced at wineries in Paarl, Wellington and Oudtshoorn.
For something a little different head to Groot Marico in the Northwest province and tour a Mampoer farm. This potent, honey tasting liqueur is distinctly South African and is distilled from several varieties of fruit. It has been likened to America's Moonshine. In addition to tastings and witnessing the distilling process, visitors can earn about the history of the drink and of the surrounding area.
