Benefiting from two oceans with distinctly different underwater ecosystems, South Africa boasts some of the most varied and beautiful scuba diving locations in the world.

The colder waters of the Atlantic (full body wet suits required) are full of kelp forests, and, thanks to centuries of stormy, windy weather, hundreds of shipwrecks are just waiting to be explored. The more tropical waters of the Indian Ocean offer an incredible variety of wildlife including whale sharks, coral reefs teeming with fish and playful sea turtles.

If you are a Padi certified diver and looking to do a spot of scuba diving in Cape Town you might want to hook up with Table Bay Diving. This establishment facilitates diving in a range of destinations with varying water temperatures that ensures visitors get to see an interesting variety of fish life, soft corals, nudibranchs, anemones, crayfish and other small fish. Further along the south coast, scuba diving in Gansbaai waters is an adventure in itself. Global Ocean Services' experienced instructors and dive masters offer small exclusive charters and personalised service and will will tailor the dive to suit your experience and desires.

The Garden Route also offers some spectacular diving spots. Scuba diving in Knysna, visitors can join in on guided dives to the famous Paquita wreck and Jetty Tapas where the rare Knysna sea horse can be seen; while those scuba diving in Mosselbay can look forward to abundant sea life and spectacular scenery. Further along the coast, Africa Blue facilitates scuba diving in Durban and surrounds. Discover the world's southern-most tropical coral reefs, engage in some shark cage diving or stand transfixed before the unforgettable Sardine Run.

Scuba diving in Sodwana Bay, just south of Mozambique, under-water enthusiasts will have access to the most important dive site in South Africa. The reefs at Sodwana Bay boast over 1200 species of fish, and, with most of the reefs at 18 m or less, they are accessible to even the most novice of divers. Even if you have never dived before, South Africa is an ideal place to learn. Most dive schools have beginner lessons, and, if you have a week or so to spare, internationally recognized dive certification courses are offered regularly.

For those who prefer to snorkel, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, especially around Sodwana Bay, offer excellent opportunities. Equipment can be rented at dive shops, and guided expeditions are offered.
