Soaring through the skies after jumping off the side of a mountain or cliff is a treat anywhere, but South Africa offers some of the most beautiful hang gliding locations on the planet, with huge open skies and awe-inspiring landscapes below. There are opportunities in South Africa for even the most novice of gliders to take in the view.

Most of the jump- off locations are situated in the Drakensberg mountains in Kwa-Zulu Natal, centred around the town of Underberg. This area is also the best place to learn to hang glide as companies provide thorough training. The spectacular scenery of the mountain peaks should make the Drakensburg any hang gliding enthusiast's first stop.

Not to be missed or underrated, though, are the jumping spots in Cape Town, particularly the site off of Lion's Head directly adjacent to Table Mountain. Several operators will rent equipment and take you up to the launch spot.

Other prime spots are located in Durban, Machadodorp and Nelspruit. Contact local clubs for jumping sites and equipment rental. Specialised Hang Gliding tour operators also run multi-day trips to various locations in the country.
