South Africans love their festivals. Nearly every place, from large cities to small villages finds some way or another to celebrate achievements, harvests, or just plain fun every year. If you like attending festivals, you will be spoiled for choice and it is a wonderful way to get to know local culture and try new things.

The Mother City is the undisputed festival capital of South Africa. Festivals in Cape Town include everthing from the weird to the wonderful and every conceivable adjective in between. Some of the the more standard festivals include those for jazz, wine, food and comedy. Specialities include festivals celebrating penguins, cheese and dragon boating.

Those looking forward to participating in festivals in Johannesburg and Durban can look forward to a whole host of celebrations incorporating jaz, cultural themes and the arts.

Many of the smaller towns also have events that draw major crowds every year. Festivals in Hermanus and its surrounds culminate in the annual Whale Festival that heralds the return of the Southern Right Whale to Walker Bay. High points of this festival include numerous musical and theatrical events and the world's only whale crier who blows his horn to announce sightings of the guests of honour.

Festivals in Oudtshoorn? That dusty old town in the middle of the Karoo? You'd be surpised. This town is brought to life yearly by the buzz that is the Klein Karoo Nationale Kunstefees - an eclectic and extremely popular festival for music and performance art, most of which in the Afrikaans language. Also in tribute to the arts, Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape hosts the National Arts festival which is the largest and most prestigious gathering of performance artists in South Africa.

Keen to attend some unique festivals in Knysna and along the rest of the coast? Foodies will be delighted with the Knysna Oyster Festival and Gastronomica, while wine lovers should set out for festivals in Stellenbosch and surrounds. Festivals in the Paarl and Franschhoek Valley, as well as those in the rest of the Cape Wine Region represent a seemingly endless stream of celebrations in honour of the grape. Free tastings from the hundreds of farms are a fixture, making these events very popular with locals and visitors alike.
