River Rafting in South Africa

The River Rafters

Our private camp, with its rolling green lawns sheltered by eucalyptus trees, is situated on the banks of the river. To pamper river adventurers, our Breede tented camp, is equipped with hot showers, flush toilets and electricity. ... more

With its wide rivers and mountainous terrain, South Africa offers some of the best river rafting experiences in the world. The rapid levels are completely dependent on rainfall so there may only be a few weeks of really strong rapids, but when they are there, they are thrilling. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Although it's a very seasonal trip, related to the winter rains in the Western Cape, trips down the Doring River at its height are a huge adrenalin rush. Situated near the town of Clanwilliam, it should be tops on any adventurer's itinerary if visiting in the months of June to September. All trips include at least one overnight stop, giving you the chance to sleep under the stars and cook over the fire next to a raging river.

Although not as hectic as the trips on the Doring River, excursions down the Orange River in Augrabies National Park in the Northwest Province are equally scenic and enjoyable. Both day and overnight trips are offered. The excursions start only 300 m from the spectacular Augrabies Falls, so you can combine your rafting experience with a chance to view one of the tallest waterfalls in South Africa.

The Sabie River near Hazyview in Mpumalanga is another location that offers white water rafting. As it is a lower graded area (2-3 grade rapids), children as young as ten can tag along, making it a great outing for the whole family. Half and full day trips are offered.
